Mr. Carrerou's chess team has been able to reach higher than anyone could imagine. Last year, two of the three teams won second place and the third one won sixth in the state. In nationals, that's where they really shined. They won first and third in the entire United States. That's a big accomplishment.
We asked Mr. Carrerou some questions:
Q. When does chess club start?
A. In December.
Q. What are you looking forward to this year?
A. Winning first place in state and national Championships.
Q. Do you think that your team will do better this year than last?
A. Yes, because I plan to have the kids practice more and work harder to become the best.
Q. What do you think chess does to your students and others?
A. It teaches problem solving skills, encourages children to overcome the fear of taking risks, concentration, and self-discipline. It also helps them assume responsibility for their decisions, rewards determination and perseverance, raises self-esteem, and promotes good sportsmanship and socialization skills. It's also fun!
To compete in tournaments, the chess team holds several fundraisers. Recently, the chess team hosted the Haunted House at this year's Halloween Celebration. It was a "scary" way to help support our chess team. Good luck!

Last year the Rockway Royal Knights did an incredible job in the states and national competition. They took first and third in the under 850 division and first in the open division for state which made them the state champions for 2003. Then they went to Orlando to compete in the national competition to show that there team was going to be one of the teams to beat. They had proved that to everybody by taking sixth in the under 750 division, second in the under 1000 division and taking second in the under 1250 division. The Rockway Royal Knights only missed first place in 1000 division by one point and 1250 division by half a point.

This year the Rockway Royal Knights went to states to defend there title as state champions and that is exactly what they did. They showed every team that they were not going to lose there title without a fierce battle. They once again took first and third in the under 850 division, but came up short in the open division by taking third place. But they are still the state champions. Now the Rockway Royal Knights are on there way to the national competition which they will try to take first place.
